Cornwall may be famed for its spectacular coastline but if you want to see a different side to the county why not choose a stay in our holiday cottages on Bodmin Moor – and explore this remote wilderness in all its untouched glory.

Bodmin Moor is a rugged wilderness that’s just begging to be explored. It is so often overlooked by those heading towards the popular coastal resorts or the far west of the county but it simply has to be on your must-visit list.

It is a region that is steeped in myth and legend and vast swathes of the landscape have barely been touched over the centuries.

A region made for walkers!

Covering an area of approximately 100 square miles, Bodmin Moor is sparsely populated, with only a handful of picturesque villages dotted here and then, which give-way to open moorland. However, the landscape is dominated by two large granite tors – Rough Tor and Brown Willy.

Rough Tor stands at around 400 metres while Brown Willy is slightly taller at 420 meters and is the highest point in Cornwall. It is one of the warmest and wettest points in Britain, but can still get pretty chilly in winter being one of the few places in the county that does get regular snowfall in winter.

While these peaks may not prove too much of a huge challenge for seasoned walkers, combining their ascent with a larger walk across the moors is what tends to appeal to most.

Certainly, if you love nothing more than a bracing walk away from what can often be quite congested coastal footpaths (especially in the summer months) then Bodmin Moor is certainly the place for you to put your best foot forward. Check out the iwalkcornwall website for their list of walks around the moor.

Bodmin-Moor

A haven for wildlife

Did you know that despite its bleak and remote feel Bodmin Moor is home to a plethora of plants and rare wildlife? Marsh Fritillary butterflies, bats and birds such as the Stonechat and Wheatear call Bodmin Moor their home while it is also the only place in the world where you’ll find the rare Cornish Path Moss.

The region was also awarded Dark Sky Landscape Status by the International Dark Sky Association in July 2017. This was in recognition of its exceptional dark skies, commitment to reducing light pollution and promoting educational outreach. What a magical setting in which to gaze up at the night sky…
