Rainy day activities

Now that autumn is upon us, the weather may well become a little more unpredictable. But not to worry, we have plenty of rainy day activities tucked up our sleeve that will keep you and your family happily entertained on your holiday here in Cornwall.

Cornwall is of course renowned for beach fun. If it’s raining, you may as well face the exhilaration of hitting the beach and try out some surfing when you have the waves to yourself. (Just head back to shore if there is a serious storm with lightning brewing, may be a touch too exciting at that point!)

If you don’t mind the thought of getting wet but prefer the warmth and comfort of the indoors then our Cornwall Holiday Park has lovely indoor pool plus spa. The heated 25-metre pool is great for some family fun or putting in a few lengths, whilst our spa is the place to go for a relaxing treatment.

Once you have dried off, it’s time to go out and explore. Here are a couple of rainy day activities nearby that we can recommend.

In nearby Bodmin, a fun rainy day activity is the Courtroom Experience. If you love a good murder mystery or you’ve always fancied doing jury service, then step back in time and witness some Victorian courtroom in action.

The Courtroom Experience is an interactive, guided tour of the original country courts of Cornwall. A knowledgeable Courtroom Usher, who introduces you to the trial of Matthew Weeks, leads the experience. After hearing the evidence, you’ll be asked to vote as to whether you think that Matthew was guilty or not guilty of the alleged crime. The usher finally takes you down to the original holding cells where you can be fully immersed in the life of the prisoner on trial in the tiny, gloomy cells.

The whole experience takes about one hour and you can find out more here: https://www.bestdaysoutcornwall.co.uk

Remaining on a legal theme, once you’ve witnessed the trial you can then experience where the prisoners met their fate in the nearby Bodmin Jail.

A great rainy day activity in Cornwall, Bodmin Jail offers you the opportunity to explore the prisoner cells and the ghoulish Execution Shed; a fully restored, 4.5mtr deep, Victorian hanging pit. This is the only hanging pit in the UK and the site of the last man executed in Cornwall.

After all this somewhat gory experience, it’s good to know that there is a teashop and gift shop to enjoy! Under 5s go free here; find out more information at www.bodminjail.org.

By the way, Bodmin Jail is also licenced for weddings, if you are looking for a very unique wedding experience!

Tea mug and warm scarfIf the kids want to shake off some pent up energy then we can recommend Trethorne Leisure Park near Launceston. Perfect for rainy days in Cornwall, hours of family fun are guaranteed with over 45,000 square feet of indoor play areas. Activities include ten-pin bowling, a dodgems rink, games arcade, soft play area, restaurant and gift shop. After a fun day out exploring it’s good to know that you can head back to your cosy lodge in Cornwall and avoid any wet weather by relaxing in the traditional Tavern restaurant enjoying a classic home cooked dish.
